By drawing parallels between spoil islands —an artificial island, often created as a byproduct of channel dredging— and the lunar surface, in Made Ground 01 and Another Final Frontier, Shona Kitchen and Aly Ogasian, present us with a new frontier, a place we know of even less than we do about the moon. In this way, spoil islands serve as a test case for alternative habitats on the margins of human habitation, not on far-flung moons or planets, but here on than we do about the moon.
